This condition causes lateral hip pain due to irritation of the gluteal tendons or bursae near the greater trochanter.
Symptoms
Pain on the outside of the hip, worse with lying on the side or climbing stairs.
Diagnosis
Clinical exam; ultrasound or MRI if needed.
Treatment
Activity modification, physical therapy, NSAIDs, and sometimes injection therapy.

Persistent lateral hip pain should be evaluated.
