Overview
Hallux valgus is a bony prominence and deviation of the big toe joint. It can cause pain and difficulty with footwear.

Causes and risk factors
Foot structure, genetics, and tight footwear contribute. Women are affected more often.

Symptoms
Pain at the big toe joint, swelling, and toe deviation.

Diagnosis
Clinical exam and X‑ray to evaluate alignment.

Treatment
Wide‑toe‑box shoes, pads, orthotics, and pain control. Surgery may be considered for severe or persistent pain.
