Lumbar spondylosis
Learn about Lumbar spondylosis, including causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options.
Overview
Lumbar spondylosis refers to age‑related degeneration of the lower spine, including discs and facet joints. It can cause back pain and stiffness and sometimes nerve compression.
Causes and risk factors
Wear‑and‑tear changes increase with age. Prior injury, heavy physical work, obesity, and genetics can contribute.
Symptoms
Low back pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility. If nerve roots are affected, pain may radiate into the legs.
Diagnosis
Clinical exam with imaging (X‑ray, MRI) when symptoms persist or neurologic signs appear.
Treatment
Activity modification, physical therapy, core strengthening, and NSAIDs. Persistent nerve compression may require injections or surgery.
When to seek care
New weakness, numbness, or bowel/bladder changes require urgent evaluation.
