Morton neuroma is thickening of tissue around a nerve between the toes, most commonly between the third and fourth toes.
Causes and risk factors
Tight shoes, high heels, and forefoot mechanics can irritate the nerve.
Symptoms
Burning pain in the ball of the foot, numbness, or a sensation of a pebble in the shoe.
Diagnosis
Clinical exam; ultrasound or MRI may be used.
Treatment
Footwear changes, orthotics, activity modification, and injections. Surgery is an option if symptoms persist.
